In his recent series, Beauty, Jody Rasch combines photography, drawing, and painting to explore the relationship between sameness and individuality. He begins with a base painting, reproduces it in black and white using photographic techniques, and creates multiple prints on photographic paper. Each print is then hand-colored using a different medium, including acrylic markers, acrylic ink, colored pencils, crayons, and oil pastels.
Each work in a given series depicts the same skin cell, yet the variations in color, texture, and medium transform its appearance. When displayed together, the individual images form a larger, collective image—something new created from repetition and difference.
The skin cell serves as a metaphor for our shared humanity. At the cellular level, we are remarkably similar, yet our differences are what make each of us unique and beautiful. Together, those differences create something greater than any single image could express.
